5 Perks with your Library Card

When thinking about the library, most people might picture dusty books, a lady wearing a cardigan and “shushing” customers, and maybe a couple computers you can use to print things. There is so much more available to people who hold the easy to obtain and FREE AACPL library card (seriously…click here to find out just how easy it is). Here is a list of 5 perks of library membership you might be surprised are at your fingertips:

1. eBooks and audiobooks

Of course the library houses a huge collection of actual books, but we don’t exist solely for those individuals that love the smell of ink on a page. Through apps like Cloud Library, and Overdrive, you can have access to thousands of titles as electronic books and audio books. As a reminder, these are free just like when you come in to a branch to borrow a book. They also have the added bonus that you don’t have to remember a due date. It’ll just get returned automatically. Good for people with busy lives…or people that might be a little forgetful like me.

2. Magazines and newspapers

If current events are more your thing, but you don’t want to have a subscription to every newspaper and magazine out there, fear not. Most branches get daily deliveries of The Washington Post, The New York Times, and The Capital Gazette among others. You can access electronic versions of these publications and archived issues through resources like RBdigital (formerly Zinio) for magazines or ProQuest for newspapers.

3. Online courses

The library has always been a place of learning, so we strive to provide as many opportunities as we can. What do you want to learn? A language, job skill, or maybe something on the computer? The library not only offers courses at our branches, but you have access to online resources from the comfort of your home. Two of the most well-known and frequently used resources are Lynda.com and Rosetta Stone. Visit the linked pages for more information on how to use your library card number to access these programs for free.

4. Homework help and tutoring

Speaking of learning, did you know that your kids can get help with their homework at the library? Take a look at our Homework Center where we offer resources in all kinds of subjects including math, science, foreign language, and test preparation. Need more individualized help. Chat live with a tutor 2 p.m.- 12 a.m., 7 days a week through our HelpNow! service. This same service also has an Adult Learning Center where you can find help with writing a resume, prepping for a citizenship exam, building your Microsoft Office skills, and more.

5. 3D PrintingPhoto of a 3D printing working on creating an object. The object is an orange colored 3D representation of a human hand.

AACPL has a lot more technology to offer than a couple desktop computers. One of our newer offerings includes 3D printers. These are located at four of our branches; Annapolis, Glen BurnieMaryland City at Russett and Odenton. Not sure how to use a 3D printer? Click here to look at some getting started information, FAQs, and info on upcoming workshops.

These are just a few of the many amazing things available with your library card. The best part, at least for me, is almost all of them are completely free and just waiting for you to take full advantage of them. Check them out today.
