A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer
A Curse So Dark and Lonely is the first book in a series by Brigid Kemmerer. It follows three narrators. The first is Harper, a girl who is kidnapped from DC and brought to the magical kingdom of Emberfall. The second is the Crown Prince Rhen, who has been trapped under a curse for years and has to get Harper to fall in love with him, before it’s too late. The third is Rhen’s Guard Commander Grey, who is stuck in the curse, like Rhen, but has to follow every order, questionable or not.
One thing that stood out in this book is how it took a Beauty and the Beast-like situation and improved on it, but it still was an original and engaging story. The characters struggles are relatable, and the characters themselves are realistic and well written. One thing that I disliked is that sometimes in the middle section it felt like the progression of the plot and the character development would stop or even repeat itself.
It’s definitely worth picking up. If you like dark fantasy and romance, this book is for you. Even if you don’t like Beauty and the Beast, this book might just change your mind.
