(August 28, 2025 – Annapolis, MD) Officials from Anne Arundel County Public Library (AACPL) joined County Executive Steuart Pittman, Del. Dana Jones, local elected officials and community members to celebrate the expansion of Discoveries: The Library at the Mall. Located at Annapolis Mall, Discoveries is one of the busiest branches in the AACPL system.
The $675,000 project was funded by Anne Arundel County, with an additional $125,000 provided by the Library Foundation.
This is the branch’s second expansion. It first opened in 2018 in a 3,000-square-foot storefront at the mall. In 2020, the library moved to a nearly 13,000-square-foot space featuring a community pantry, event space and a dedicated teen area.
The latest expansion adds 3,200 square feet and includes a larger room for programs, an improved Discovery Dock children’s area, new space for middle-grade readers, an expanded collection for all ages, and a shared workspace with desktop computers for customers seeking a quieter environment.
Discoveries leads the AACPL system in program attendance, with nearly 43,000 people participating in events at the branch in fiscal 2025. More than 143,000 people visited the location last year, checking out over 107,000 items. Systemwide, county libraries recorded more than 1.6 million visits and more than 6 million items checked out.
“Discoveries represents the future of public libraries,” said Skip Auld, CEO of Anne Arundel County Public Library. “What started as a small experiment has become a model for how libraries can adapt and grow with their communities. This expansion is about more than square footage—it’s about creating a welcoming, dynamic space where people of all ages can imagine, explore and build a better future together.”
