Circulation Loans & Overdue Fines Policies

Anne Arundel County Public Library sets loan policy and limits that will provide customers with fair and reasonable access to the library's resources.

A.   Checkout

  • Customers should present their library card in order to check out materials.
  • In the absence of a library card in hand, a customer may not use another person’s library account to check out, even if the other person is a member of the household. Exception:  Staff may check out a hold request being picked up on behalf of the customer.
  • If the library card is not in the customer’s possession, materials may be checked out with photo identification. If customers do not have photo identification, they will have to verify identifying information.
  • Scanned barcode images of the library card on personal devices of the cardholder are also acceptable.

B.   Loan Periods

  • All items circulate for 21-days with the following exceptions:
    • Interlibrary Loan OCLC items are specified by the ILL Department.
    • Reference materials may circulate for time authorized by person in charge.
  • High demand items circulate for 7-days.

C.   Loan Limits

  • Total items checked out may not exceed 99 items per library account.
  • Wi-Fi Hotspot, Chromebook Kits and Historic London Town and Garden Family Passes are limited to 1 per account.
  • A limit may be placed on the number of high demand items on one topic that can be checkout by a customer. The decision will be made at the discretion of the Person-In-Charge.

D. Renewals

  • Most items are limited to 5 renewals.
  • Interlibrary Loan Marina items can be renewed two times.
  • Interlibrary Loan OCLC items are specified by the ILL Department.

Overdue Fines Policy

All Anne Arundel County Public Library materials are exempt from overdue fines. Fines are charged for Interlibrary Loan items each day an item is overdue, excluding Sundays, library holidays and system-wide closures.

AACPL Library staff will make every effort to work with customers to recover lost items and fees.

A.   Overdue

  • Overdue notices are sent by email or text message only.
  • Interlibrary Loan Material $0.30, daily fine, maximum fine amount $15.00.

B. Delinquent Accounts

  • Customers’ accounts that are in a blocked status must pay 20% of the total bill fine amount owed to continue borrowing material at each checkout. This includes accounts in collections.

C. Collection Agency

  • Library card accounts with fines or fees of $50.00 or more may be referred to a collection agency. A service charge to recover the collection agency fee is also assessed.
