Aurora Rising book cover

Aurora Rising is the first book in the series of the same name by sci fi authors Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman. It follows a squad of the Aurora Legion, an intergalactic peace keeping force, as they uncover a dangerous universe-wide conspiracy.

One of the best parts of the book is our group of protagonists themselves, the way they interact and put their individual abilities together to put plans in action. My personal favorite of the seven heroes, whose perspectives swap throughout the book, is Kal, the team’s brooding alien warrior. He and his people are the most interesting of any in the book, but they don’t get the attention they deserve.

Without revealing too much, the plot is engaging with plenty of exciting set pieces and action scenes, however, some at the beginning don’t have the most payoff in the grander story as it’s revealed. I also didn’t like the romances, because I felt that characters who ended up together didn’t have as much chemistry as some others, but it didn’t distract too much.

Is the book worth reading? Yes. There’s action, world building, and a colorful main cast. There were plot flaws, but none too big to take you out of the story or make me overly frustrated. Overall, a fun read and a must for any sci fi fans.
