A Heart So Fierce and Broken is the second book in its series by Brigid Kemmerer, and reading the first book would provide some background on the characters since this book does make some references. A Heart So Fierce and Broken mainly follows three characters. The first and main character is Grey, ex-Guard Commander for the Crown Prince, in the kingdom of Emberfall. The second is a princess from another kingdom, Lia Mara, who’s used to being thrust into the shadows, but wants to try to ally with Emberfall. And the Crown Prince Rhen who’s being threatened by rumors that he isn’t the true heir to the throne, with Grey being the only one who knows the true heir’s identity.

One of the best things about this book is that it can take a rather cliché concept, twist it and take it to a new level. The characters are well written, with realistic dialogue and conflicts readers can relate to. It is well-paced, not too fast, but it still keeps readers very engaged in the action. One thing I particularly didn’t like is that we don’t get Rhen’s perspective as much as the other two narrators. He is one of the characters that is the most conflicted, and it would have been nice to see more of that.

Young adult and teen readers who like fantasy and dark fantasy would enjoy this book, and it’s very much worth reading.
