Every Other Weekend is a cute romance and coming-of-age story written by Abigail Johnson. The book follows the characters, Adam and Jolene, as they become good friends and love interests. They are both kids of divorced parents and encounter each other for the first time at an apartment complex where each has a parent living at. The characters of this story are relatable and well-developed. Each has a unique personality apart from the other. For example, Jolene likes films, and her interest in filmmaking is shown clearly in the novel. This novel is unique because the chapters switch between the perspectives of the main characters and some are formatted like text messages instead of standard paragraphs.
As a reader, I liked how this story was entertaining and charming. The author does a good job exploring relatable themes like divorce, familial relationships, and grief without making the story too sad. I think it is also important to caution readers that this book covers the more serious topic of sexual assault. I do not have anything to dislike about this story- I was interested the whole time while reading. Anyone who relates to the themes presented in the story or likes long books should consider reading it. I would recommend this book to anyone who is middle-school age or older.
