Daughter of the Deep by Rick Riordan

Gautham T., Broadneck High School

Daughter of the Deep is Rick Riordan’s passion project of a sequel to Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. It follows the story of Ana Dakkar, a student at the renowned Harding-Pencroft Academy, a high school focused on marine science and naval advancements. Her life changes at her freshman class’s weekend trials, where a tragedy reveals big secrets about Harding-Pencroft and their rival school, Land Institute. Alone and on the run, Ana and her friends must discover the secrets hidden by her ancestors before it’s too late.

I very much enjoyed this book. Riordan’s writing style is truly amazing at immersing the reader; I truly felt I was with the characters at every moment. Though the places and events are fictional, they really felt as if they could have been real; Riordan perfectly blends realism and fantasy. Another thing I loved about this book is the amount of plot twists. There was always something that wasn’t fully explained, and the book kept me guessing what was the truth. The ending left room for more, but I felt satisfied with how it was presented.

Overall, this was a really good book and I’d recommend it to anyone who’s read Riordan’s books or is interested in science fiction.
