Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller

The first book in the Daughter of the Pirate King duology is intriguing yet, it reads and finishes like it could be a standalone. We meet our morally gray protagonist- seventeen-year-old pirate captain, Alosa, on her journey to becoming captured by the captain of the NightFarer. Only, she seems to be the sole person on that ship who wants to be there. She’d been given a mission by her father to retrieve a third of an ancient map that guides to unimaginable treasure. Alosa prepared for many a fight; as the pirate princess, she was trained by the best pirate in the game. However, she’d met a worthy opponent in her captor, Riden. He keeps her on her toes but that shouldn’t phase her, naturally, since she is the Daughter of the Pirate King.

I’d heard about this book on BookTok and decided to try it. Fortunately for me, the story got interesting when a healthy sprinkling of fantasy was introduced. The book was very fast paced from beginning to end. I thoroughly enjoyed how confident the main characters were in themselves; it helps to bring out the best kind of dialogue in a story which is the witty kind. Especially when the main character’s dialogue could rival Tony Stark’s narcissism. Personally, for me, it took a few pages for the story to become engrossing. I recommend this to readers who enjoy YA enemies-to-lovers books. And those who prefer their characters to not necessarily be good people.
