The Heartbreak Bakery by A.R. Capetta

By Sydney W., Annapolis High School

The Heartbreak Bakery by A.R. Capetta follows the queer teenage baker, Syd, who makes post-breakup brownies. Suddenly, those brownies start causing the breakups of the Proud Muffin Bakery’s valued friends, customers and even its owners. Syd has a full plate, dealing with the aftermath of a breakup, new love on the horizon, and other obstacles that life throws. However, Syd is still determined to fix all the mistakes those brownies made, one couple and baked good at a time.

I loved the realness and the emotion within this story. The character’s struggles and triumphs are portrayed so realistically, and better yet, through the lens of baked goods and recipe cards. This certainly was a unique and fun read, but also one that dove deep and left a lasting impact.

There was nothing I particularly disliked about this book. It was out of the typical genre I read within, and surprised me nonetheless. It was very impactful.

I would recommend this book to lovers of realistic fiction, baked goods and genuine queer representation. It’s rare to see agender representation within media, and this book portrays it very well, so any agender people out there, I hope you can see yourself reflected within this novel. This book covers sensitive topics, so I wouldn’t recommend this for younger readers.
