Improbable Magic for Cynical Witches by Kate Scelsa

Kennedy E., Arundel High School

Improbable Magic for Cynical Witches does not disappoint for high schoolers looking for an engaging sapphic/queer coming-of-age story. It's wonderfully written and seasoned with hints of mystery and fantasy. Explore the life and thoughts of Eleanor as she attempts to cope with the past, deal with the present, and find an outlook on the future. After losing her first love and first friend in a new town, Eleanor has spent the past year in a trance-like stupor, making a vow to stay away from the local teenagers. However, after a mysterious handwritten tarot book arrives in the store mail she works in, followed by a witch named Pix, magic is about to enter her life.

This book had a good ending that left readers like me satisfied. The way that the characters were written felt raw, real, and relatable. My personal favorite aspect of the book was the tarot card images, with funny witty descriptions of them underneath. The plot was engaging, due to the fact that it painted a mystery around Eleanor’s past before the main events in the plot, leaving readers to guess what had happened. With a beautifully written plot, and lovely diverse characters this book is a must-read!
