Magus of the Library by Mitsu Izumi

by Sydney W., Annapolis High School

This manga series follows a poor boy, Theo, who loves to read, but isn’t allowed in the library because of his impoverished state, and because he looks different from everyone else in his village. This all changes however, when he meets a Kafna, a magic librarian who works at the great library of Aftzaak. With new goals and new determination, he works his hardest to achieve his dream of becoming a Kafna and has many adventures along the way.

This series is both light and dark at once. It deals with topics like poverty and racism, and deals with those topics quite well, but it is also a lighthearted story about a boy who wants to become a Kafna and who loves the magic of reading. The only problem I have with this series is that in certain places, it introduces a number of characters at once and it can be overwhelming to get to know them all. Besides that, I believe this series is perfect. I would recommend this manga series for those who love reading as well as those who love fantasy and coming-of-age stories. There’s nothing too dark in it, but there are some heavier topics like racism and poverty, but I would recommend this for people of many ages.
