The Royal Tutor by Higasa Akai

By Sydney W., Annapolis High School

Set in a kingdom called Glanzreich, this manga series follows a man, Heine, who is often mistaken as a child due to his height and young face. This series focuses on Heine’s efforts to tutor the younger princes of the kingdom and the relationships between the members of the royal family. The four princes cause nothing but trouble for Heine, but he is determined to make them into proper heirs to the throne.

The characters are all unique and loveable and will certainly leave the reader laughing by the end. It’s a lighthearted series, and the way the characters are written contributes to that mood. And the character development is natural and unique in its own way.

One problem I have is that at first, the characters seemed to each have their own cliché trait or personality, but as readers get deeper into the series, these clichés get twisted and rewritten outside of expectation.

I would recommend this series for people who like comedy or just want a light, refreshing series. The art is cute and well-drawn, and the characters are memorable. This series will appeal to manga readers as well as comedy and fantasy readers.
