Stain by A.G. Howard

By Rosie B., Old Mill High School

Stain is a beautiful, dark and emotional tale of a young girl finding herself and the strength it will take to save her kingdom. Lyra is a lovely and reserved young princess robbed of her throne by those she once called family. Fleeing to the edges of her daylight kingdom, Lyra becomes known as Stain and lives only according to the rules of her own heart. The true extent of Lyra’s capabilities remains shrouded in mystery as the clock ticks down to when her kingdom will truly need her, rather than the fake standing in her place.

The author weaves delicate connections between the characters and accentuates the complex emotions and thoughts of each individual. You become immersed in the characters and the world with the intricate imagery woven into each page. Although a bit slow paced, the plot was beautifully constructed, with a twist I did not quite foresee. A fairy tale in nature but a fantasy world all its own, this book is perfect for any fantasy lover as well as anyone looking for a novel that knows how to convey the quiet and courageous strength of living true to your own heart. The cliché union of the prince of darkness and princess of light said to be necessary to save both kingdoms, also adds a sprinkle of romance for those romantics out there.
