When streetwise gambler Sam (Van Heflin) returns to his hometown of Iverstown, childhood sweetheart Martha (Barbara Stanwyck) assumes he has come to blackmail her over the suspicious death of her aunt, which happened years earlier. Thus begins a dangerous game of cat and mouse, in which the wealthy and powerful Martha, and her district attorney husband (Kirk Douglas) try to uncover the real reason he has returned.
