Libraries are closed Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4 for Independence Day.

Most library locations will reopen July 6. Curbside pickup is available and bookdrops are open at most locations.

Do you live, work, attend school or own property in Maryland? If so you’re eligible to apply for a free Anne Arundel County Public Library card.

What kind of identification is needed to get a library card?

Present any one of the following photo identification credentials:

  • U.S. or foreign state driver’s license
  • Government-issued ID: Military, Passport, Permanent Resident Card, Department of Corrections, or Certificate of Citizenship/Naturalization
  • Student Identification Card
  • Employee Identification Card

         Other forms of identification are accepted if you do not have a photo ID.

Expired Library Cards

Educator’s library cards expire annually; all other library cards will expire after two years of inactivity. If your card has expired, please visit any Anne Arundel County Public Library branch in person, with identification that has your current address.  

Virtual Card Information

Only those who live or work in Maryland are eligible.
Those who do not qualify violate the terms of agreement with our vendors
and risk having their card suspended.

Please allow up to 72 hours to receive your virtual card number and PIN.

With your virtual library card number and PIN, you will be able to:

  • Checkout eBooks and audiobooks*
  • Access our premium resources
  • Place holds on items Please be sure to provide an email address and/or phone number to be notified when your holds become available.

To get a physical library card:

  • Go in person to any Anne Arundel County Public Library Location
  • Bring your photo ID and proof of current address.  
    • For your photo ID, please present any one of the following credentials. The credential must be current (unexpired) and have a permanently affixed photograph. 
      • U.S. or foreign state driver’s license
      • Government- or employer-issued identification card
      • Student identification card
      • Passport or consular identification card
    • For proof of address, please present any one of the following items (electronic versions are acceptable):
      • An identity credential showing a residential address
      • Current lease or rental agreementVoter registration
      • Utility, telephone, credit card, or bank statement
      • Vehicle registration card or title
      • Pay stub issued within the past 30 days
      • First-class mail postmarked within the past 30 days

*Please note If you place holds on Overdrive (Ebooks and Audiobooks) with your temporary library card number, they will be lost when you get your permanent card, unless you contact Overdrive to have the items switched to your permanent library card number.
